Registration and Creating a New Account

To begin, I went to the Contabo homepage. Since I wanted to test their VPS, I hovered over the VPS tab in the main menu and selected Cloud VPS.

I was then taken to a page listing all the available VPS options. After going through the plans, I settled on Cloud VPS 20 and clicked Select.
That led me to a multi-step configuration page. Contabo gives you a lot of customization options upfront, so I had to carefully select:
- Term Length – I chose 12 months to get the best rate.
- Region – I went with the European Union for lower latency.
- Storage Type – I picked 200 GB SSD.
- Operating System – I selected Ubuntu 24.04.
- Auto Backup – I chose to skip it for now, but I saw the option to add daily automated backups.
- Networking and IP – The default bandwidth and IP address were fine for testing.
- Login credentials – I set a strong root password for my server.

On the right-hand side of the screen, there was an Order Summary panel that updated live as I configured my VPS. On the other hand, InterServer’s dashboard was clean and straightforward from the beginning. Once I logged in, I saw my account overview, prepay balance, active services, and even past login details.
The sidebar was clearly labeled:

With Contabo, there are a few ways to install WordPress, depending on what panel or method you prefer. I tested CloudPanel’s one-click WordPress deployment.
It did install the CMS correctly, but I had to manually configure DNS records and SSL certificates for the site to work with HTTPS. That extra step might not be intuitive for beginners.
To try something simpler, I installed cPanel with Softaculous (available for a fee). This time, the WordPress setup was much smoother—just pick a domain, set username and password, and click install. But that method still required adding cPanel to the VPS manually unless you bought a managed plan.

However, once you get past the infrastructure level, there are some gaps:
